Aurora Sensors

NDI manufactures the smallest, most cost-efficient electromagnetic tracking sensors on the market today. These sensors have been designed for integration into third-party instruments and offer the following features:

  • Cost-efficient sensors, allowing for disposable applications
  • Robust sensor designs for daily re-use applications
  • Sensors as small as 0.3 mm in diameter for integration into high-gauge needles

Five Degree-of-Freedom Sensors

These five degree-of-freedom (DOF) sensors are small, allowing for many integration options. The x-y-z position of the sensor and two of its orientations are reported, allowing surgical instruments to be displayed in the correct anatomical context in real-time.

This sensor integrates into rigid or flexible tools where a small diameter is necessary. The sensor and lead wires are surrounded by a protective material, which facilitates integration (for example, into needles).

Aurora 5DOF PCB Sensor, 0.8 mm x 11 mm, 2 m

This sensor is mounted to a tiny PCB, which makes it more robust than our standard 5DOF sensor. This sensor is manufactured using mass-market technologies that provide the enhanced robustness of PCB design.

Aurora Shielded and Isolated 5DOF Sensor 0.9 x 12 mm

Aurora Shielded and Isolated 5DOF Sensor, 0.9 x 12 mm

The sensor is encased in a protective tube; the lead wires are shielded to reduce interference from external electrical fields; and the entire assembly is electrically isolated. The design offers more mechanical robustness than other sensors, and can withstand more than 500 bending cycles (at a bending radius of 7.5 mm and ±180° bending angle).

Aurora Encapsulated 5DOF Sensor 0.9 x 6 mm

Aurora Encapsulated 5DOF Sensor, 0.9 x 6 mm

This shorter sensor supports integration into tools that require tighter bending performance. Its accuracy is slightly less than the longer 5DOF sensors. The sensor is encased in a protective tube and the assembly will withstand more than 100 bending cycles (at a bending radius of 7.5 mm and ±180° bending angle).

Six Degree-of-Freedom Sensors

For applications that require tracking all six degrees of freedom (6DOF).

This general purpose 6DOF sensor is ideal for applications that required tracking of all six degrees of freedom. This sensor is encased in a protective tube whose small diameter and short length allow for many integration possibilities.

Aurora Micro 6DOF Sensor 0.8 mm x 9 mm

Aurora Micro 6DOF Sensor, 0.8 mm x 9 mm

This is the smallest 6DOF sensor offered by NDI. This sensor is supplied pre-soldered to a REDEL connector containing a pre-programmed SROM device, allowing the sensor to be used out of the box. The sensor is encased in a protective tube and connected to a flexible micro-cable that can withstand more than 10,000 bending cycles (at a bending radius of 7.5 mm and ±180° bending angle).

Ready-To-Use Tools

Ready-to-use tools reduce integration efforts and enable rapid application development. These tools incorporate everything required to begin tracking right out-of-the-box, (including the sensor, cabling, enclosure, connection, and firmware components).

This is a general purpose digitizing probe with a rigid, straight metal tip. OEM customization of the metal tip length and shape is also possible when required for specific applications.

Aurora 6DOF Reference, 25 mm Disc, Standard

Aurora 6DOF Reference Tool, 25 mm Disc

This is a general purpose tracking reference that allows for many fixation methods. The flat PEEK disc incorporates two reamed holes for fixation, and the upper side of the disc incorporates a mark that identifies the centre of an optional hole that can be drilled if required. The tool can also be secured with adhesive strips for temporary fixation.

This is a very robust, multi-purpose tool. The Cable Tool is designed for researcher or OEM customer evaluation and prototyping. This tool contains a 6DOF sensor at the tip of a flexible 2 m shielded cable. The cable has a silicone outer jacket that is robust and easy to handle.

Application Specific Tools

The applications for EM tracking in the medical field continue to expand and the ability of the technology to enhance procedures which involve minimally-invasive instrumentation is gaining recognition. EM tracking can give users more precision, greater spatial awareness, and higher confidence during interventional procedures. NDI has the experience and resources required to customize these tools to meet specific OEM requirements.

Aurora 5DOF Flex Tube, Type 1

Designed for insertion into a catheter working channel or flexible endoscope, this tool consists of a 2 m tube that incorporates a 5DOF sensor at the tip. The tube is 1.2 mm in diameter and is radiopaque. This tool is reusable and autoclavable, and can withstand more than 1500 bending cycles.

This tool is designed for insertion into the working channel of a flexible instrument. The tool consists of a 2 m tube that incorporates a 5DOF sensor at the tip. The tube is 1.3 mm in diameter. This tool can withstand more than 1,500 bending cycles (at a bending radius of 7.5 mm and ±180° bending angle).

This tool allows the user to view both the shape and the tip of a flexible instrument. The tool contains a 6DOF sensor at its tip with six additional 5DOF sensors distributed along 85 cm of distal length. This allows for calculation and rendering of the tool’s shape in real time. The placement and spacing of the sensors can be customized for specific OEM applications.

This Chiba-tip needle consists of a stylet and an outer cannula. A 5DOF sensor is integrated into the tip of the stylet, which allows the tip to be tracked directly.

This Chiba-tip needle is the smallest gauge, tracked needle on the market. A 5DOF sensor is integrated into the tip of the stylet, which allows the tip to be tracked directly.

Accessories

Aurora Tool Cable Assembly This assembly contains everything required to build an Aurora tool from an individual sensor. It comprises a 2.4 m tool cable attached to a Redel connector, with a built-in SROM device. All that is required is to solder the lead wires from one 6DOF sensor (or up to two 5DOF sensors) and program the SROM file. Package includes:

  • 4 wires for sensors (1x6DOF or 2x5DOF)
  • 4 additional wires for 3xGPIO signals (button press and/or LED functionality)
  • Redel connector with built-in SROM device
  • Straight-cut loose end
