The Aurora® real-time electromagnetic (EM) tracking solution gives simulator manufacturers exceptional tracking accuracy and reliability for customizable integration into state-of-the-art medical training and surgical rehearsal simulators, and military flight and gunnery simulators.

The Aurora simultaneously tracks multiple sensors in five or six degrees of freedom (5DOF/6DOF), with the position and orientation of each sensor tracked to sub-degree, sub-millimeter accuracy.  These lightweight, miniaturized sensors are embedded into medical instruments and head mounted displays (HMD), tracking the most precise and subtle of movements within the simulation tracking volume. No line of sight is required, ensuring unobstructed tracking and visualization of the user’s movements within the integrated simulation interface display.

System Components

The Aurora electromagnetic tracking solution is highly configurable. Its components are customizable to support different medical and military simulator specifications and form factors. The following hardware components are available for system integration:

  • Planar Field Generator: for mounting on a positioning arm for tracking in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Tabletop Field Generator: this thin, flat field generator incorporates a barrier that minimizes potential tracking distortion caused by conductive metals.
  • System Control Unit (SCU): controls the field generator, collects tracking data, calculates the position and orientation of each sensor, and interfaces with the simulator system. Available in enclosed and PCB formats. 
  • Sensor Interface unit (SIU): amplifies and digitizes the electrical signals from the sensors, while minimizing potential data noise. 
  • Sensors: miniaturized sensors are embedded into medical instruments, gloves, HMDs, and any other point to be tracked.

*All data collected with the Aurora V2 System in an environment free of electromagnetic disturbances. Accuracy depends on tool design and the presence of metal. Note: Results based on more than 300 random positions and orientations distributed throughout the characterized volume.
