NDI Celebrating 40 Years - Navigate New Possibilities

Waterloo, Ontario – March 5, 2021 – NDI (Northern Digital Inc.) celebrated its 40-year anniversary this past February. As a leading innovator and manufacturer of optical measurement and electromagnetic (EM) tracking solutions, its products are trusted for their exceptional accuracy and reliability in the medical industry.

In 1981, University of Waterloo graduates started NDI by designing custom, scientific instruments for industrial measurement applications. Realizing the further potential for their technology, they set out to design an optical motion measurement system for human movement tracking.  These activities formed the foundation of NDI’s innovative optical measurement and EM tracking solutions that are now widely used in the medical device, surgical training, and medical research industries.

Today, NDI’s products are used daily to enrich people’s lives globally. By partnering with the world’s leading medical device OEMs, NDI’s tracking technologies are selected by medical OEMs to help clinicians precisely guide their surgical tools as a means to provide complex surgical procedures such as placing pedicle screws in the spine, correcting heart rhythm issues and assisting with external beam targeting during radiation therapy for cancer treatment. Closer to home in Waterloo Region, NDI’s technologies can be found in some surgical suites of local hospitals, where they contribute to delivering exceptional patient care

Headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, since its inception, the company has grown to over 250 employees, with manufacturing facilities in Waterloo, Germany, and the U.S., and a sales office in Hong Kong.

As a technology pioneer in Waterloo region, we’ve experienced a great deal of change over the past 40 years to our market landscape, technology, and community,” says David Rath, President of NDI. “It is only through the commitment, dedication, and passion of our employees that we have grown and been successful. It’s truly a rewarding experience knowing that NDI’s continued success will contribute to improving the quality of life for more people globally.”
