3D Guidance Overview

Leveraging over 30 years of expertise in medical guidance technology, the trakSTAR and driveBAY provide highly accurate, real-time 3D position and orientation tracking in six degrees of freedom (6DOF). Both systems can simultaneously track up to four (4) reusable 6DOF electromagnetic tools, in a ready-to-use configuration that supports interchangeable sensor sizes.

Each system works in conjunction with a Mid-Range Transmitter (MRT) or Short-Range Transmitter (SRT) that generates the optimal tracking volume required for a diverse range of 3D medical navigation applications: ultrasound image fusion, biopsy needle guidance, oncology, and neurosurgery. A clear line of sight between the sensor and transmitter is not required.

The trakSTAR and driveBAY share the same reliability, versatility, and ease of use. Both systems have a small hardware footprint, require minimal cabling, and operate without the need for intermediate equipment (e.g. pre-amplifier) between the sensor and electronics unit. In terms of size, the trakSTAR is a desktop unit that connects directly into a main power source, while the driveBAY is designed to fit into a drive bay of your computer, using the computer’s power supply.

Electronic Units

trakSTAR™

A desktop electronics unit with integrated power supply which can track up to four 6DOF sensors simultaneously.

driveBAY™

The tracking electronics fit into the drive bay of a PC chassis and tracks up to four 6DOF sensors simultaneously. The unit uses the power provided by the PC power supply and no additional power supply is required.

Transmitters

Emits a low-intensity magnetic field and establishes the coordinate frame and tracking volume. The transmitters come in two different sizes.

Mid-range Transmitters

The Mid-Range Transmitter (MRT) offers a flexible set-up that can be integrated into most applications where the tracking volume needs to cover a larger anatomical region. The MRT can be placed close to the patient without obstructing the surgeon’s or IR’s access.

Short-range Transmitters

The Short-Range Transmitter (SRT) provides a solution for the smaller difficult to access regions. The SRT may be mounted on imaging devices for a dynamic tracking solution.
